Our wide selection of water softeners offers a cost-effective solution to hard water problems.
Water hardness is created by naturally existing calcium and magnesium salts, which can be found in various amounts in all water sources.
The “harder” the water is, the higher the concentration of these salts. Hard water gets its name from the calcium and magnesium salts forming scale on capital assets, which causes equipment failure.
This is a costly problem for a commercial laundry, and it significantly increases the housekeeping workload in a hotel, necessitating the usage of a hard water softener.
Hard water not only makes soap and detergent washing more difficult and expensive, but it also causes scale / limescale formation when the water is heated.
Heating hard water causes the previously soluble calcium and magnesium salts to become insoluble and forms a rock-like deposit on the heat transfer surface.
Increased Energy Costs – The scale acts as insulation, dramatically reducing heating or cooling efficiency and adding to your energy costs. In many industrial and commercial applications, a cooling water softener or boiler feed water softener will rapidly pay for itself in reduced energy costs.
Increased Pumping Costs and Wear – Scale reduces the internal bore of pipework, which causes impaired flow and increased pumping costs as the pumps must work harder to deliver the required water volume.
Overheating and Hot-Spots – Because scale is an insulator, it can cause hot spots to form on heat transfer surfaces as heat is not conducted away fast enough. In a steam boiler, this over-heating can cause potentially disastrous failure, making an efficient boiler water softener an essential part of the feed water treatment system.
A hard water softener contains a solid media called an ion exchange resin which the replaces the “hard” salts of calcium and magnesium for “soft” salts of sodium which do not form scale.
This is a long-established and reliable chemical process. As the ion exchange resin softens the water, it gradually becomes exhausted and is regenerated using a brine solution made from inexpensive tablet salt. This automatic regeneration involves backwash, brine-draw and rinsing cycles, during which the accumulated hardness is washed from the resin to drain.
The regeneration is normally automatically initiated by volumetric water meter. Where a continuous soft water supply is required then this can be achieved by duty/standby duplex, twin-tank or multi-stream arrangements.
