Kinetico collaborates with M&E on The Savoy Hotel water treatment project

Kinetico water softening technology was installed as part of the £100 million restoration project at the Savoy Hotel. The Kinetico system will eliminate hard water issues, helping to maintain the efficiency and performance of building services plant and ensuring that surfaces and sanitary ware in this exclusive hotel retain their luxurious shine for as long as feasible.
The Hotel was closed in 2007 for a comprehensive renovation of the entire structure. In the project, 38 bedrooms, nine suites, and a magnificent 325-square-meter, two-bedroom Royal Suite were added. The resulting expansion in water services, coupled with the hotels position in an area with hard water, necessitated an increase of the hotel’s water softening system. The non-electric, automatic system from Kinetico proved to be the perfect option.
Paul Daciuk, Construction Manager at the M & E services contractor for the project, SPIE Matthew Hall, continues the narrative. “Water softening prevents scale buildup on sanitary and brassware in hard water areas and stops soap scum from appearing on laundry. By inhibiting the build up of scale in pipework and on heat exchangers and elements within the hotel’s hot water plant, it also keeps the services running as efficiently as possible.”
Two new Kinetico CP 213 water softeners were installed in the hotel’s incoming mains water plantroom, adding to the eight existing units that have been functioning well for a number of years. While one tank is being activated, the other is being cleaned with a salt solution to remove calcium and magnesium ions. This ensures that softened water can be given continually to satisfy the needs of the hotel. A fully automatic control valve measures the amount of soft water used and regenerates on demand, allowing daily water consumption to fluctuate without generating waste.
Environmental technology and efficiencies have been implemented wherever possible. For instance, a combined heat and power (CHP) plant will reduce the hotel’s reliance on the national grid by about 50 percent, while an innovative system recovers the heat from all kitchen appliances to preheat domestic hot water. Restaurant cooking oil will be recycled and converted into biodiesel, while waste management systems will recycle up to 90 percent of the hotel’s waste. The Kinetico equipment fits with this innovative, low-carbon approach because the technology relies on the kinetic energy of water to operate, hence eliminating the electricity expenditures required to operate alternative water softening devices.
This hotel is one of the world’s most iconic hotels, and Kinetico is pleased to be a part of this enormous redevelopment project. We are proud of the quality and dependability of our products. Our ongoing partnership with the this hotel proves that we continue to provide these high standards in the most lavish settings.
